National Adoption Month

View Transcript

Each November advocates and professionals engage in activities designed to raise awareness about the adoption of children and youth from foster care. This year, the state of Florida presented "30 Days of Amazing Children: Explore Adoption!" - a statewide initiative featuring children in foster care who dream of being adopted by forever families. A unique "Amazing Child" available for adoption in Florida was featured every day during the month of November. Use the links at the side of this page to see all featured children.

The primary focus of National Adoption Month is to recruit foster and adoptive families for children who are in need of a family to grow up in. Events were held throughout the state to increase awareness about public adoption in Florida and celebrate the joy of family.

The first major effort to promote awareness of the need for adoptive families for children in foster care occurred in Massachusetts in 1976, when Governor Michael Dukakis announced an Adoption Week. The idea grew in popularity and spread nationwide. In 1984, President Reagan proclaimed the first National Adoption Week, and in 1995, under President Clinton, the week was expanded to the entire month of November.
